    and i continued looking for a high-end sacd, cd actor with the thinking that in that location had to be gear with more finesse than the mass-produced pioneer.

    eventually, that led me to the sony scd-xa9000es. which i acquired and which i powered-up yesterday afternoon[30 apr 2005].

    my initial experiences with the unit continue to persuade me that japanese-manufactured, high-end sound gear accept serious blueprint-manufacturing flaws. the japanese are not making them like they in one case did. i accept mentioned the problems with two marantz units, now consider the problems that i accept encountered with this stereophile A+ rated sony unit of measurement.

    after set-up, the first disc that i selected for playing was the sacd/cd hybrid vol iii of oscar peterson's "exclusively for my friends" [B0002233-16]. THIS SONY WOULD Non RECOGNIZE It AS AN SACD. puzzled, i removed the disc and decided to play information technology in the pioneer dv-578a. the pioneer recognized it equally a sacd and played it without diffficulty. hmmmmmm.

    ok, now i decide to play a cdr of a japanese cd that i had used recently in austin for a cd player evaluation. the cdr was a dupe of FUNK'North FUN: BILL WATROUS QUINTET featuring Fine art Pepper[TKCB-71588]. this disc is recognized as a cd and is played very musically.

    so, once more i try to play the oscar peterson hybrid sacd as a sacd. information technology is recognized as a hybrid and defaults to 2-channel sacd playback. pressing the beginning button, once again, horrible noises that i interpret equally servos going crazy. no playing occurs.

    after stopping, changing the playback fashion to cd, and pressing the play push, the sony plays the disc as a cd. hmmmmmmmmmm.

    i don't have many sacd'southward. 6 of the oscar peterson[B0002228, 2231, 2233, 2234, 2235, 2236 -16], and 4 others. for whatever reason, all 6 volumes of the oscar peterson sacd reissues are recognized every bit hybrid sacd'due south, but the sony is unable to play them. with each disc, many horrible noises[servos hunting?] - no playback. changed to cd playback, all are read and played. ALL SIX ARE RECOGNIZED Equally SACD'Due south Past THE PIONEER Thespian AND PLAYED Equally SACD'due south BY THE PIONEER.

    ending the evaluation session, i decide to play the cd of a cdr i used to evaluate cd players in austin. the cdr was played with such realism in austin that i thought i was back at tavern on the green. that chip of kit was a naim cd5x with a flattop2.

    the cd is nancy lamott's MY FOOLISH HEART[mmCD003]. now, i accept played this disc for years on my naka. a friend's wadia. my rio portable. my panasonic portable. my sony portable. my bose wave. a micro yamaha arrangement. my cheap pioneer. and an hhb-cdr850. none of these players reveal whatsoever hissing from nancy lamott's vocals. this sony unit, however, makes nancy lamott sound like a fearful snake: hissing and much tremolo.

    contrasting it immediately with the pioneer, and the pioneer-based hhb-cdr850 it is clear that the xa9000es cannot reproduce a CD of a singing vox accurately. what a painful deficiency.

    you know, i read your caveat that this sony unit was rated an A+ based on its playing of SACD's. i think that you lot must accept been furnished a "ringer" unit. the one i have evaluated cannot play an sacd. and you really should score sacd, universal players, for their cd, cdr playing capabilities.

    as a cd player, playing a vocalizer, the sound quality of this SCD-XA9000ES is and then bad as to amaze with its horribleness.

    i really call back that you lot should re-evaluate that bit of sony gear. i don't call back that i accept can ears. and i don't think that you lot do, either. i accept read your review of this player when you first reviewed it. makes me think that sony has degraded it since then. surely your ears are more than skilled than mine. and i cannot imagine how anyone could rate this electric current iteration of this player as fifty-fifty getting a form...it is an F at best.

    don't have this too difficult. after all, you were spot on concerning the excellence of the $150 pioneer DV-578A.

    for some reason, if a player is designed to play sacd's, information technology doesn't play cd's, cdr's worth a shit. that has been my experience.

    and i don't care what anyone says, my conclusion, later on listening to some jazz-oriented sacd's: they suck. the cd versions are amend. far improve.

    so, sacd playback equally a spec is foolish. shame on me for thinking otherwise.

    sacd is a dead-end medium. and all players that accept been designed, manufactured to play that dead-end medium are shit insofar as cd, cdr playback is concerned.

    stereophile's atkinson thought that my sa-8260 had to have been damaged. oddly plenty, the replacement unit was as deficient every bit the original. did the same things. principally, declining to recognize or play cd's, cdr'southward. you may have missed the mail service, just its most spectacular failing was going south, totally, when trying to play janos starker'south recording of bach's unaccompanied suites for cello.

LP was a yupiteru vinyl of archival condition. cdr was a dupe of the cd upshot of that LP.

    and concerning nancy lamott cd, this sony player f*cks her upwardly so much that i cannot believe it.

  5. I own a Sony SACD actor and it works wonderfully at CD, CDR and SACD no bug worth talking nearly. Some SACD's sound bully others sound like sh!t no unlike and so CD's or LP'southward. The medium is non at fault! Blame it on the recording engineer.

  6. well, here is my peculiar problem. in houston, nosotros don't go many options these days to audition sound gear.

    you lot tin can do the concatenation store, tweeter, which is concentrating on video. though a sony es dealer, no sony es audio gear on the shelf. though a denon dealer, no denon audio gear other than a micro player.

    ok, there is this high-end dealer, audio concepts. only that set-up is designed to sell linn gear. oh, they claim to sell arcam, nad, only it is a linn store.

    later on that it is the big-boxsters, bestbuy,circuit city: they are pushing video, non audio.

    i have to tell you, i have made some efforts to audition gear. i travel. in LA, i thought that i could observe audio gear to audition. pretty tough. no one had any demo gear, save for ane dealer in koreatown. i must say that he had rooms with demo gear, just about were not hooked upwards. i wanted to audition a musical fidelity cd5 player and the arcam fmj cd player. musical allegiance unit was hooked upward to a some very loftier-end stuff...a tube preamp, a halcro amp, and wilson-benesch speakers. and i wasn't whelmed.

    espcially by the transport of the mf role player. very flimsy.

    we tried to play the arcam unit of measurement. though it was brand new and had never been played, it wouldn't read my pat barber hybrid cd. and information technology wouldn't read whatever of the house cd's either.

    within a month, i was in the miami area. mf, cyrus, arcam distributors all told me what great dealers they had. what a joke. the mf dealer in coral gables had nothing to audition. he told me that he told a customer what to buy and so when the customer fabricated the purchase decision, he ordered the hardware. hmmmmmm.

    that seemed to be the case for the arcam and cyrus dealers besides.

    oddly enough, i stumbled into a chain store, audio advice[owned by the consortium that owns houston's tweeter stores], that had a bit of audio gear. if the store wanted to label itself accurately, it would name itself ipod and video advice.

    they didn't think that they had a scd-xa9000es. just they did. subsequently much try and much time it got hooked up. i only played some traveling cdr's on it. merely it sounded completely different from this unit of measurement that i have received. almost makes me wonder if the guts of this sony are chinese copies.

    i wanted to audition cyrus gear. the cyrus gear is distributed by a business firm in dallas. they recommended a dallas dealer. before i drove to dallas i telephoned to learn if he had the cyrus gear on his floor for auditioning...he didn't.

    how odd that the cyrus distributor failed to recommend his austin dealer. the only retailer, that i accept found, of this level of gear that has the gear in his shop and is prepared to demo it.

    a fabulous experience. and so revealing. continues to surprise me how much of a difference the separate power supply fabricated to the output of the naim histrion. continues to surprise me how distorted the cyrus player and power supply were in comparison to the LP played on the rega p3 and dynavector moving coil cartridge.

    continues to surprise me as to how beautifully nakamichi got it 15 years ago. continues to surprise me how hard information technology is to duplicate that excellence.

    and the cost of the gear has nothing to practice with the accurate allegiance of the gear.

    i just want to get back to where i was with the naka.

    now, every bit to sacd's. i accept 10 sacd's. i take hundreds of LP's and CD'due south. principally jass and classical. one of the things that i accept plant interesting is these x jass sacd's offering no better fidelity than the cd version, cd layer of the hybrid. this includes the ii mobile fidelity hybrids that i own...jim hall'south concierto and pat hairdresser'south cafe blue.

    the verve hybrids of oscar peterson's exclusively for my friends audio clearly to be a computer-generated reporting of the cd'due south. NOT REMASTERED. and i remember the aforementioned is true of the chet bakery hybrid, bakery'southward holiday, and art pepper's gettin' together.

    now, i might have a tin ear. merely i don't think and so.

    if it is going to exist the situation that 2-channel sacd becomes just another variant of copying a cd principal, then sacd is on the fast track to oblivion. unless the easily readable liner notes disclose the mastering engineering science, i will not be acquiring another sacd. why would i want another gull of a cd, lp that i already own?

    dear lord, delight reveal to me the location of the circuit board that volition restore my naka. that is my prayer.

    in closing, if i must brand the sony, the pioneer achieve cd loftier-allegiance does anyone have whatsoever experiece with these outboard devices....mf ten-dacv3, x-10v3, x-psuv3?

    only really, try to audition any audio gear. i cannot figure out how it is done. information technology used to be the norm. now, information technology seems as if one has to fight to make it happen.

    look, for me to hear the cyrus, the naim, the rega kit....i had to make a 4 60 minutes bulldoze to austin, spend the nighttime, and make a 4 60 minutes drive back.

    only to get a hearing of audio gear that will probably be the last gear that i mind to earlier i augur in. i must say that the auditioning was worth it.

    even my tin ear catches the excellence of the rega p3 and the dynavector mc cartridge. and i heard the betterments of the naim cd5x when coupled to the flattop2 power supply. i noted the much better fidelity of this philharmonic than the cyrus cd8x and psx-r.

    my ears still work. what so astonished me is that at that place is so much departure in playback quality.

    how is information technology that stereophile rates the sony equally an a+? i give it a c[at all-time]. how is it that stereophile rates the myrants sa8260 as an a? i don't think it claim a grade.

    how is information technology that any of these ratings go gospel?

    and why have i paid any attention to them? because i cannot get my ears to whatsoever diversity of sources. i have had to fight to listen to some linn gear, 1 mf player, one low level arcam player, ane naim role player + power supply, one cyrus player + power supply, one meridian-end sony.

    and that is the opportunity for someone living in the metro area of the 4th largest city in the usa.

    what does an audiophile exercise who lives in a smaller city?

    perhaps he/she does better. no doubt that whetstone sound in austin, tx does the audiophile right. just still, the pick is limited. naim, cyrus.

    so far, the naim gear is the best that i have heard. makes cdr'south sound like vinyl. applause.

    so information technology goes.

    From what I see, many seem to have a fleck of a hestitation in whole-heartedly recommending the sony scd-xa9000es for its $3000 price tag. However, this sacd player is priced around $1800 now, and I would love to hear how anyone feels now about recommending this machine. I am in a serious look out for a sacd actor in <$2000, mainly for 2 aqueduct listining, and so far, my option is this sony actor, and music hall maverick sacd ($1500), or denons. thanks for the advice folks!

    Send FredT300B a PM and detect out about the Houston Sound Society. It might be a good way to listen to lots of gear locally. The Audio Concepts store in Dallas has much more than but Lynn simply ofttimes y'all need to call up and accept them set gear up for listening. Up here in that location are four listening rooms and last time I went but 1 had Lynn set upwardly in information technology.
    As for players I have heard extremly adept playback on a number of lower priced players run through a Scott Nixon tubed DAC though I don't think any of them were SACD. Nix can help a bad recording or poor mastering but there is many a cheap player that tin can brand a expert transport. Lately it seems the cheap players are performing as well or close to it those that price many times the amount, putting a practiced DAC on them puts them correct up in that location and the cost with the DAC remains well below.
    Y'all might requite the present Toshiba DVD role player a shot. I looked at one in Fry's and it had the SACD logo on it and the price was $200. So far I accept had very skilful luck with the players and still take some now ancient ones that have 24/96 in them and do a bully chore with redbook. Personally I wouldn't want a new one without a Scott Nixon but would give one a shot since there is a 30 twenty-four hour period money dorsum if you don't like it in the big concatenation stores.
